Dear Reason: A few months ago, I began a new job working for the head of a department. My boss is terrific and has been quick to let me know she’s pleased with my work. My problem is with the other assistants in my department.

Dear Reason,
I work in a 12 person office. It's me and a bunch of guys. I don't mind being "one of the guys," but I'm starting to wonder if they're getting too comfortable. Because while I think their "I totally nailed her" comments are just a sad commentary on men on the whole and don't take it very seriously, this company will eventually grow, and not all women (or men. Or CLIENTS) are going to be as cool as I am. And the boss is the worst! I might as well just call him Mr. Misogynist.
I don't want to tell these guys to clean up their act, and I really don't think I necessarily should. And yet...they do need to learn that this wouldn't fly in most companies.
Thoughts?
Just call me Elaine

Dear Reason, I feel like a lot of assistants are intimidated by their boss, or they feel like their boss doesn’t like them that much. I have an opposite problem. My boss is absolutely dependent on me. He can hardly eat a snack without running it by me first for my approval. What started as a good working relationship has turned into what feels like a babysitting job. He always tells me that he’s never had such a great assistant, and he doesn’t know what he’d do without me. I want to get promoted and move on someday, but at this rate, I don’t know that I’ll ever leave this desk! What should I do? Assistant Overdrive

Reason started her career in entertainment in her parent’s living room staging the musical “Annie” with the neighborhood kids. Since then, she’s had stints in both New York and Los Angeles working in film, theater, and television. Reason resided in Manhattan for six years, where she interned for an independent film company and then went back to her roots to work for the producers of Avenue Q, Baz Luhrmann’s Production of Puccini’s La Bohome, and Rent, among others. In 2004 Reason moved to La-La land where she was faced with traffic, perpetual sun, and the world of television. Reason landed a plum job working for a major network and after several months of wondering whether or not she should just go back to school to be a kindergarten teacher, was recently promoted off of a desk. In hindsight, it was well worth the wait.
