Dear Reason,
When a contact says "Keep in touch" what does that mean exactly? Phone? Email? And how often?
Constant Contact
Dear CC, The answer to this one is short and sweet. Unless you’ve created a love connection with someone and have a new best friend, essentially they’re telling you to email when you land somewhere new. You’re also welcome to shoot them an email if you have a specific way in which they may be of service to you. For example, if you’ve heard there’s a job opening at a company that you discussed with the contact and you know they have a friend there, then that’s perfect. Send an email asking if they would be willing to pass your resume along with a good word. However, don’t shoot them an email every time you hear about an opening at any old company asking if they have a contact there. That will get really old reeeeeally fast. Essentially, they’re telling you that it’s ok to contact them again in the future…but they aren’t telling you that they want a new pen pal. Use your judgment and get in touch with your contacts wisely and sparingly. Most people are happy to help another person get where it is that they’re trying to go. And your contacts will be happy to make a phone call for you every so often. Just don’t flood their inbox and you’ll be fine. The Voice of Reason Send your questions to
