The Insulted & the Injured - Chapter 4l: Getting Fired PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Anonymous Assistant

No, not me. Asshole Midget.  By his clients. It's like a revolving door of clients leaving him. Or at least getting just plain fed up with him. Fortunately, or unfortunately (depending on how you looked at it) many of this clients wanted to have "off the record" conversations with me.

You've got to be careful with "off the record" conversations. Usually I would just listen to them rant and maybe answer a question or two with a yes or a no.  Never give away too much information that would be obvious had come from you. But boy, were those conversations interesting.

Distinguished Actor was the first to go. He was a well-respected client who gave Asshole Midget some class.  Distinguished Actor was a client for about six months. I was listening on the phone when Distinguished Actor fired him. The gist was that Asshole Midget wasn't spending time on him anymore so why should he spend the extra 10%? Asshole Midget seemed upset but not real surprised.  But the kicker was when Distinguished Actor said to Asshole Midget, "Tell [Anonymous Assistant] that I think she is wonderful and I really appreciate everything that she has done for me."

Next up was Talented and Handsome Director. We had an off the record.  I tried to be loyal. Well, no I didn't. I knew that T&H Director was on the fence on whether he hated Asshole Midget or whether he could tolerate him awhile.  I said, "Why tolerate? Cut the fucker loose."

Didn't take too much to get him riled up. I think the phrase was, "I like 10% of him and the other 90% is TOTAL BULLSHIT. HE'S HISTORY."

The next to go was Director of Teen Films. No real drama there - it was pretty cut and dry. "This guy [Asshole Midget] is full of shit," was pretty much the gist of that one.

One of my favorite people is Talented and Insecure Director. There was no need to ever have an off the record with him. We just knew how each other felt about the Asshole Midget. One day T&I Director said to me, "He is just so mean to me. Sometimes I want to beat him to a pulp."

My reply was,"I'll hold him down for you."

He lasted a little while after I was promoted. "Half the reason I stayed as long as I did with Asshole Midget was because of you," he said to me. "With you gone, the other half just wasn't enough."

But Anonymous Assistant, you ask, you got promoted, isn't that great? Can't you still be working with T&I Director? No. The Company just didn't work that way. Asshole Midget would have had to admit that he needed me in order to keep a client. Nope. Never going to happen. He'd rather lose the client.

I think he has lost other clients since I was promoted. Sometimes I hear that his clients are meeting with other managers or I realize that he has no idea what is going on in a client's life. And I think to myself, "But, don't you talk to this person?" And the answer is No, because he isn't representing them anymore.

Having someone call on a Monday morning and say "you will never believe what your boss did over the weekend" was a common occurrence. But it wasn't so good when it came from clients. Older Actress said to me one morning, "he was so wasted and just dancing around the room and I thought to myself, 'God, I hope no one knows that he's my manager.'"

The Anonymous Assistant works for a high level manager who has A list actors (one huge one in particular) and directors. To email him/her, send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

I dedicate this book to everyone who has ever been an assistant in the world of entertainment, especially those who have been emotionally and/or physically abused by their boss. The tone of this is semi-humorous, but I know, and many others know, the deep psychological wounds that can be incured during this time. You are not alone.
