Spec the One You’re With PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ariel

I know I have been MIA once again. So much has happened – finished my pilot, got notes from people, reoutlined it, now rewriting it… But you want to hear about writers’ assistant life, right? So here goes…

When talking to the writers the other day about having finished my aforementioned pilot (which I was very proud of, as writing time is quite difficult to squeeze in when working 60-80 hours a week), one of them said: “That’s great, Ariel. But what have you done for your career today?”

I was stumped (and I am rarely at a loss for words). I mean, I just worked on this pilot the last few months, am about to rewrite it, and they are wondering what I am working on today?! WTF?

So I ask you: What are you working on today?

I asked the writer what he recommended. He said a spec of the show I am on. But, in TV school, I was raised to not write a spec of the show I’m working on. I’m confused. I told him this. He said he got his first writing job that way – and he was only a P.A. at the time. I pointed out that that was years ago (it was; about twenty!); times have changed. He replied that on the last show he worked on, just last year, the writers’ assistant did a spec of the show (as well as an original pilot), the executive producers read and liked them both, then gave her a freelance.

So guess what I’m doing now…? Outlining a spec episode of the show I’m on. Maybe you should, too? :)  Just a thought.
