What the hell did you do when I left? PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Anonymous Assistant

When Asshole Midget finally paid for his own ticket to go visit Famous Actress on her set, I was approached by one of the executives.

"Why are you still working for Asshole Midget?"

"I don't know fucking know. Maybe because you guys haven't promoted me yet." Ok, I didn't say that. What I basically said was that my promotion needed to be made official.

It was strictly a coincidence (to me at least) that this all happened when Asshole Mdiget left town. The One in the Closet called me down to his office one day and said, "We need to make this official. The problem is that Asshole Midget is having a problem with letting you go. We need to find you a replacement and just get it done.  Should you tell Asshole Midget or should I?"

"Uh, you should."

And so he did. He left a message for Asshole Midget to call him, and when he rerturned the call, Asshole Midget was informed that since i was being promoted, I would be leaving the desk soon. It was time for Asshole Midget to interview other assistants. He took it in stride, as if the whole thing was his idea. I was listening to the phone call, wary about his "pride" in my promotion.

The phone call ended. Asshole Midget calls me back. "What the hell did you do when I left?"

"Oh, the second you got on the plane, I ran to The One in the Closet's office and said 'Please please promote me."

Irreverence at its best. Probably not the best thing to have said at the moment. But I was pissed, because I really had said nothing!

I guess Asshole Midget won that round though. Helen, my great 2nd assistant had quit right before he left for the set. So replacing me was not going to be swift. When he returned, we started going through candidates to replace me. No one was good enough, and then someone else was promoted and my own promotion became less of a priority to the Executives.

What to do when no one around you is fighting to make your promotion happen?  I stayed on as an assisant. It was to last another six weeks.

I dedicate this book to everyone who has ever been an assistant in the world of entertainment, especially those who have been emotionally and/or physically abused by their boss. The tone of this is semi-humorous, but I know, and many others know, the deep psychological wounds that can be incured during this time. You are not alone.
