How Celebrities Can Survive a Recession
Written by Mali Perl
Let’s face it, being a celebrity means not having to deal with life, reality or any combination of the two.  It also means that things like money, feelings and decisions are all handled by people paid to buffer away any unpleasantness.  Despite the many layers of gatekeepers, noises about the economy and the recession have filtered past the secured perimeters until celebrities can’t ignore that while none of it actually affects them, they have to pretend that it does so that people don’t think they’re “out of touch.”

It’s during these dire and discouraging times that celebrities are facing the greatest threat to their wellbeing and happiness, after younger celebrities and a ban on pharmaceuticals.  After decades of defining grandeur and louche living, they are confronted with a depression that cannot be cured with a little pink pill.  The economic malaise demands to be dealt with and much like corporate executives, they’re being humiliated into downsizing and economizing because the recession has banished big living in favor of frugality.  Easy for mere mortals for whom coupon clipping and 2 for 1 sales are regular part of life.  But Chanel doesn’t “do sales” and the Four Seasons doesn’t have a special going on the penthouse suite.  In order to change their lifestyle from platinum to gold-plated, from diamond to c.z., celebrities must learn how to be A-list on a pretend B-udget.

Here at IN, we are not immune to their plight and as always, are eager to help them find their way during these dark, difficult times.  Recessions provide opportunities to have your therapist talk to your management team about prioritizing.  It may seem like there’s no way out of all that glam living but there are plenty of ways for celebrities to regroup and recharge.

1. It’s all about staying home.

Image Gone are the days when renting a five star resort for you and 25 of your nearest, dearest and hottest was considered a little mini-break.  Now, it’s time to settle in for a staycation and what better place than your humble 15 bedroom cottage?  Why not invite your friends over for movie night in your intimate screening room?  Have the kitchen staff whip together some gourmet, organic munchies and let the studio deliver a yet to be released movie.

 2. Everyone loves clothes and why shouldn’t you wear a new outfit every day?

Image But with tough times upon us, it’s inappropriate to flounce about in your couture.  Time to scale back and adjust yourself to what “the people” are “wearing.”  Dressing down can be fun!  Instead picking up groceries at Ralph’s in a $1k dress, throw on a pair of ripped $250 jeans.  Don’t think twice about wearing that fringed $400 scarf.  And now, it’s even okay to wear shoes more than once so every cloud really does have a silver lining.

 3. Being green is not just a way to pretend to care about the environment and hang with Leo.

Image Going green is also a great way to pretend to save green.  Care about your carbon footprint although you’re not quite sure what that means because you never passed high school bio?  Not to worry!  Just skip the private jet and pat yourself on the back for roughing it in first class.  Ditch the Maybach for a hybrid Mercedes but keep your driver (no need to go overboard).  Tired of lugging your ginormous Marc and Chloe bags?  The new chic is a designer cloth tote, a perfect low key yet high impact accessory that lets everyone think that you care.

See how simple rules can work, without actually making any drastic changes that could result in the slightest discomfort or acknowledgement that there are bank accounts that don’t have 8 digit balances.  Considering that they’re unemployed for most of their careers and spend most of their time wandering around in a daze, it’s no surprise that celebrities can easily adjust to recession-lite living.  It’s up to us to acknowledge and appreciate their sacrifices.  After all, they’re doing it all for you.
